The number of higher education students in Brazil doubled in ten years

The proportion of Brazilians from 18 to 24 years old attending higher education doubled in the last ten years. According to IBGE (The Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics), 6.9% of the Brazilians from 18 to 24 years of age were enrolled in higher education in 1998.
In 2008, 13.9% of the population from 18 to 24 years old were attending universities. The report from IBGE also showed that the increase in the proportion occured in all Brazilian regions.
Even though this ratings are still low when compared to other countries such as the Netherlands, it is a result of the investments made by the Brazilian government in higher education. The tendency is for this number to continue growing in the coming years, according to the Institute.
